When I first began writing for children, I decided to illustrate the works myself. Without any formal education in the visual arts, other than required art classes in my public school education, my initial endeavors were rough. The pictures on the page scarcely matched those in my mind's eye. Needless to say a great many hours were spent learning to draw, sketch, and paint. Those hours of practice provided an opportunity for me to grow as an artist, moving into visual works beyond illustrations for my books.
I started taking photos for use as reference pics for painting and drawing. Friends and colleagues commented on the originality and composition of my shots; consequently, I decided to make some available for purchase with options for photo or canvas prints. To the right is a shot of the American Rover departing its berth at Town Point Park in Norfolk, Virginia, on one of its sunset cruises.
